Have you ever stood in a crowded room, bathed in the glow of your own premier light show, and wondered: Am I actually invisible?
As a well-established and highly respected professional DJ and compere, I’ve recently been forced to ask myself this very question. It started making me wonder if I was developing a bit of an inferiority complex. But after chatting with a few of my fellow DJs, it turns out I’m not alone. It seems that “The Invisible DJ Syndrome” is a real industry epidemic.
Let me take you through a few recent weekends on the job.
The Tale Of The Tape
The first reality check happened at a beautiful Wedding where I was booked alongside a live band. When the band arrived, they were greeted like rock royalty. The bride and groom showered them with hugs, kisses, and warm pleasantries. They personally ensured the musicians were treated to a hearty meal and a steady supply of drinks for the evening. Moi? Not even an acknowledgement. No food, no drink, not even a “hello.”
A month later, a bit of paranoia set in at a high-end corporate function. I watched the photo booth operator walk through the door. He was immediately greeted with handshakes, a warm welcome, and a drink passed right into his hand. Was I acknowledged? Nope.
The final straw came at another Wedding. At the end of the night, the client publicly lauded the table dresser and florist for their fantastic visual display. The crowd cheered. I stood behind my decks, having successfully guided the entire evening’s timeline, wondering if I had accidentally slipped on an invisibility cloak.
The Value Disconnect
Naturally, I started looking at the economics of it all. At that first gig, the band was paid fifteen times my fee. At the corporate event, the photo booth operator walked away with £800. At the final Wedding, the table dresser charged a cool £1,500.
Perhaps it’s time to put my prices up! We all love this profession, and most of us accept we will never be millionaires. But we do want our industry status raised above that of mere event cannon fodder. The atmospheric weight of an entire evening rests on the DJ’s shoulders, yet we are frequently treated like a piece of utility equipment plugged into the wall.
Visible At Last
Thankfully, my faith in humanity—and my profession—was completely restored last night.
As I was packing down at the end of a fantastic Wedding, a group of teenagers (around 17 to 19 years old) approached me. They didn’t just offer a passing “thanks.” They came over to actively praise the evening, thanking me for a fabulous selection of what they called “banging tunes.” They went out of their way to compliment my superb presentation style and the quality of the lightshow. To top it all off, they spotted my car loading up outside, called it a “lovely beast,” and eagerly asked how fast it could go!
For one evening, I was visible again. It’s a testament to why we keep spinning tracks: when the music hits right, the appreciation makes all the invisible nights completely worth it.
